Your child first dental visit

The first dental visit shapes a child relationship with the dental practice for many years. Done early and relaxed, it becomes something normal. Done late and in an emergency, with pain, it can leave a fear we carry into adulthood. Here is how to do it well.

When is the right time

The widely accepted recommendation: the first visit around the age of one, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. It sounds early, but the purpose is not treatment, it is familiarity: the child sees the room, sits in the chair, the dentist takes a look. That is all.

This first „low-stakes" visit is the best investment you can make. The child associates the place with something neutral or pleasant, not with pain. And if a real problem ever comes up, it is no longer also the first time they walk through the door.

How to prepare them (and what NOT to say)

Keep it simple and positive: „we are going to count your teeth". Completely avoid the words „it will not hurt", „do not be scared", „do not cry". Even with the best intentions, they introduce exactly the ideas of pain and fear the child was not thinking about.

Do not pass on your own feelings. If you are afraid of the dentist, it is better for the other parent to go, or at least not to discuss it in front of the child. Children read the tension in our voice far better than we think.

Never use the dentist as a threat („if you eat more sweets, I am taking you to the dentist"). It turns the dentist into a punishment, the exact opposite of what you want.

Why baby teeth matter

The most common misconception: „they fall out anyway". Baby teeth hold the space for the permanent ones. A tooth lost too early lets the space close, and the permanent tooth no longer has room to come through straight. That is how the crowding that later needs orthodontics appears.

On top of that, decay in a baby tooth hurts just as much and can become infected, and the infection affects the permanent tooth bud underneath. It is not a „temporary" problem.

Hygiene, by age

Cleaning starts before the first tooth: wipe the gum with a damp cloth. When the first tooth appears, a soft baby brush, twice a day.

Children do not have the dexterity for effective brushing until around age seven or eight. Until then, let them try on their own (it matters for independence), then brush again yourself. Amount of paste: a grain of rice up to age three, a pea after that.

Avoid the bottle of milk or juice at bedtime. Sweet liquid stays on the teeth all night, and saliva, which normally protects, decreases during sleep. It is the classic cause of early childhood decay.
